This book relates the history of a small farm, including the changes in the land, the flora and fauna, and the people residing there. Beginning with the days when the land was hunting grounds for the Kansa Indians and then the Delaware Reserve, this is the story of the forty acres of degraded prairie in northeast Kansas that the author and her husband purchased in 1976. Since then, the farm has been in the forefront of the organic, sustainable, and local foods movements, returning to its roots as a diverse family farm. The book documents the economic and agricultural changes that the land has endured and gives hope for a new agricultural future, with small farms once again contributing significantly to the local food supply. The many historic photos illustrate how the farm and its occupants have changed over the last 140 years.

I believe this was the German spelling of the family name before it was anglicized to Shireman. Georgiana Skeet and Adam Shireman, Jr., mentioned on page 60 of the book, were my grandparents. I'm not sure exactly what year they moved to Stover, Missouri, but it was some time well before my mother, Alma Shireman was born there in 1916. I think Frederika Skeet Briggs and my mother must have been cousins if I am correct that Arthur (her father) and Georgia (my mother's mother) were siblings.I very much appreciate this book from Joy Lominska for all the information provided including much I was not aware of. Thank you.

The Old Home Place The Story of a Kansas Farm Joy Lominska 9781484954973 Books Reviews
This book includes chapters relating to my family and was also interesting to read about the farm. It would be great reading for anyone living in Kansas and the Midwest.
It's a great story for how people lived in the past. To me personly it brought beck a lot of memories of how it was in the olden days( if the 30's and 40s)can be called olden. They were for me. I loved reading about all the people who had lived there before and after our family had lived there. Thanks for doing such a good job Joy.

Although about the history of a a single farm in Kansas, this one farm is shown to represent the history of so many small farms in the Midwest. The book is an engaging overview of the rise, decline, and now renewal of small farms and the advantages of local production of food versus corporate farming.
