It really is touch and go whether seventeen-year-old Lucilla will survive to inherit her property. Someone is trying to kill her. Sarah Trent, hired by Lucilla's guardians to be her companion, finds herself shocked and amazed at how many close calls Lucille has.Sarah doesn't know whom to suspect: The sulky cousin who is courting Lucille in vain? The fond uncle who does all he can to make her happy? The mysterious American who has a habit of prowling the grounds at night ostensibly to observe nocturnal creatures that he ostensibly writes books about? The plot is straightforward but gripping. Lucilla's danger provides the action and the suspense. The mysterious Americant provides the romance, for Sarah finds him attractive as well as suspicious. Sarah's lively thought stream is ever entertaining. She is a feisty young woman, yet still a lady, probably the ideal for her time (1934), and ours too, for that matter. Amusing characters include Lucilla's dithery old aunt and a young French gentleman who falls in love easily and is making a comic attempts to acquire English colloquialisms.
The time is between the two world wars. Young men of the family have been lost, and there's a general dread afoot of another war. Everything reflects the period, from the uneasy financial climate to the rakishly tilted woman's hats.
Touch and Go is a fast read and a total pleasure -- Patricia Wentworth at her best.

This romantic suspense story is one of Wentworth's very best and will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read. The hero is one of my favorites so far, having now read about half of her books. A very satisfying tale of an heiress on peril and the intrigue surrounding her and those closest to her.
I enjoyed the book very much especially after I read the ending to make sure I approved before I finished reading the book. It's all about the characters and they were enjoyable.
Quintessential Wentworth but with a stronger than usual plot and characters. A wonderful read for when you want to just simply be engrossed and entertained
Alas much as I enjoyed this novel . I was surprised by the abrupt ending. And who is O'Hara, mentioned in the end of this novel. All in all, I enjoyed this suspenseful book.
A new development, a new mystery in every chapter. Human characters simplified but easily recognized as the good, the bad and the ugly. A romantic touch, irony at a French romantic, this is the world of big money attracting crime and plots.
In an old fashion English British language and turn of mind.
Lovers of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers will be delighted.
